Astana, November 29, 2010 – In the frame of his visit to the Republic of Kazakhstan to participate in Astana OSCE Summit, UN Secretary-General, Mr. Ban Ki-moon held a meeting with the group of women-peace activists from Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan who are also the members of regional initiative “Women for peace and security in Central Asia, the Ferghana Valley region”. The meeting will be also attended by the representatives of Central Asia civil society, academia and governmental bodies. The meeting took place in Astana Rixos Hotel at 10.00 on November 30.

United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is honored to inform that Mr. Aidos Sagat, singer, composer and the leader of a well known music band in Kazakhstan “Urker” became UNHCR Honorary Patron for Kazakhstan. On 15 November 2010, Mr. Saber Azam, UNHCR Regional Representative/Regional Coordinator for Central Asia and the leader of Urker Band signed a “contract of appointment”.

Astana, on the 5th of November 2010 the Representative Office of the United Nations in Kazakhstan and Nazarbayev University signed the Memorandum of understanding.

25 October 2010, Astana - The 2010 Millennium Development Goals Report prepared by the Government together with the UN Country Team has been presented at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan in Astana, Kazakhstan with the participation of senior government officials, senior experts and representatives of the Diplomatic community.

On September 17, 2010 at the Conference hall of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs took place a ceremony of signing of the significant Agreement between the Government of Kazakhstan and the United Nations. This day, the Executive Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Rapil Zhoshybayev and the UN Resident Coordinator a.i., Ms. Hanaa Singer, signed the Agreement regarding the exemption from visa requirements for holders of UN (Laissez-Passer) passports.

On September 13, 2010, the UN Special Rapporteur on adequate housing held a press conference in the UN house in Astana where she shared her information on the status of the realisation of the right to adequate housing in the country. During her eight-day mission, the independent expert held meetings with a wide number of stakeholders, including Government officials, local authorities and civil society organisations, and discussed the progress made and the difficulties encountered by Kazakhstan in the implementation of the right to adequate housing.

Astana, 26 August 2010 - Kazakhstan hosts an international conference on nuclear disarmament in its capital Astana to mark the International Day against Nuclear Tests, officially observed on August 29. The Conference jointly organized by the MFA RK and the UN, was opened by the State Secretary/ Minister of Foreign Affairs Rk, Kanat Saudabayev, who also delivered a message of the President to participants.

17 August 2010, Astana – The Round table to discuss the assistance to the Semipalatinsk region and priorities for 2010-2015 carried out by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs jointly with the United Nations in Kazakhstan take place in Astana.

The second World Humanitarian Day takes place this year on 19 August. The day will raise awareness of what it means to be a humanitarian aid worker by describing their work, explaining their principles that guide all humanitarians, and potraying the hazards that humanitarian aid workers face in the course of their work.

ASTANA, on the 22nd of July, 2010, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and UN held a joint monitoring meeting on UNDAF outcome 1: Economic and Social Well-Being for All, with particular attention to vulnerable groups, including women, children, migrants, refugees, youth and aged people, and people with disabilities. The purpose of the meeting was to share information about national priorities relevant to UNDAF Outcome 1, ongoing and planned programmatic interventions of UN agencies and development donors for better alignment with national priorities and achievement of UNDAF results.

On 20 June countries around the world observed the tenth World Refugee Day (WRD). This year, WRD coincided with the 60th anniversary of UNHCR and was devoted to the topic “They Took Our Home, but they cannot take Our Future”.

GENEVA (ILO news) – The annual Conference of the International Labour Organization (ILO) concluded its 2010 session today with a strong call for placing employment and social protection at the centre of recovery policies. “We must get the right balance of policies to secure strong, sustainable and balanced growth,” said conference delegates.

ALMATY, June 4, 2010 – Department for International Development (DFID) in partnership with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) and Eurasian Economic Community (EurAsEC) organize the press conference devoted to launching of the Central Asia Regional Migration Programme (CARMP) in the Republic of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan and Russian Federation for the period 2010 - 2013.

ASTANA, May 28, 2010 – the Ministry of Environmental Protection of the Republic of Kazakhstan jointly with the UN Development Program have officially opened the International Year of Biodiversity (IYB) in Kazakhstan.

Starting from 2010 UNFPA is implementing the new Country Programme within the third cycle of assistance to Kazakhstan. The country programme was approved by UNFPA and UNDP Executive Board on 9 July 2009.

On April 6-7, the UN Secretary-General paid an official visit to the Republic of Kazakhstan. Kazakhstan became the last country in the SG’s programme of visit to the Central Asia countries.

March 3, 2010 at the faculty of law of the Eurasian National University named after L.N.Gumilyov took place an opening ceremony of the information centre of the United Nations in the Republic of Kazakhstan and a launch of the first edition of the ENU Bulletin (Series Jurisprudence).

Astana, 27 January 2010 at the Ministry of Foreign affairs RK has been done a start to the new United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) for the Republic of Kazakhstan for 2010-2015. At the launch of the new UNDAF took part representatives of the line Ministries, governmental partners and representatives of the UN Country Team.
